Decorative panels are a finish layer applied over a wall, ceiling, or structural element to provide a final, finished look. Unlike paint or wallpaper, panels can add real depth, texture, dimension, and often acoustic value on top of appearance. The material range is wide and keeps growing:

Here’s the part that’s easy to overlook: a panel is only as good as what it’s mounted to. Panels won’t look good if the substrate underneath is not square, out of level, or full of drywall imperfections. These can cause issues like gaps in the seams and corners that aren’t quite 90 degrees. None of the issues are the panels’ fault but are framing problems.

Traditional installation usually means field-built framing. The carpenters measure, cut, and fasten furring strips or stud framing directly to the wall. During this process, they square and level as they go, making it a slow and tedious process highly prone to human error.

Additionally, every irregularity in the existing wall has to be corrected before the installation can begin. For a commercial job, this can add weeks to the timeline and require more skilled labor and higher costs.

A Better Foundation for the Panels

This is why the mounting system is just as important as the panel itself. Our Railset Web system replaces field-built framing with seven pre-engineered aluminum components that snap together into a “web,”. This makes a mounting grid that’s inherently square, level, and plumb before a single panel arrives on site.

Also, because the grid is consistent, it masks any issues and irregularities on the wall behind it. Web sections can be built on site or pre-assembled in our shop so they are ready to install. Once the web is up, it becomes the mounting surface for the panel itself, with Trimset aluminum edge trim finishing the joints and corners cleanly.

Proof in the Field

One example is at Illumina Corporation’s R&D office. The issue they had was that the original panel vendor walked away from the job. They also refused to warranty their hardware because they considered the specified panel structurally unstable. This left the company with a project that was two weeks behind schedule and had no approved installation method. In order to fix the issue, our millwork contractor switched to Railset Web. Pre-assembled frames were shipped straight to the jobsite. This allowed installers to put up 260 square feet of framing in 90 minutes, and ultimately over 7,000 square feet of paneling went in. The rigid quality of the frame kept the panels aligned even though the material had already been flagged as “unstable.”

A similar result played out at LA Mission College’s three-story administration lobby atrium. We installed laser-aligned, pre-assembled framing, hitting an installation rate of roughly 128 square feet in 58 minutes. Maintenance and Long-Term Performance

One thing many people forget when choosing a panel system is that it should last. All buildings settle, MEP work gets added or rerouted, and panels occasionally get damaged and need replacing. Replacing the panels is much easier when the mounting is done correctly and with the right system.

With panels adhered directly to a wall or set into field-built framing, replacing a single damaged section often requires removing or even replacing the surrounding panels. With the mounting grid, each panel sits on a defined, repeatable point on the web. This is contrary to the old system where each was fully bonded across its back. Individual sections can come down and go back up without touching neighboring panels. This is also helpful should the electrical, data, or plumbing lines behind the wall need attention years after the original install. The web leaves a consistent cavity rather than a solid, glued-up assembly.
